Bridging the Gap in Access to Essential Medicines

Everyday, millions of patients struggle to access life-saving prescription medications. Whether due to non-availability of certain medicines, temporary shortages, abusive prices or substandard quality, getting the right treatment remains a challenge—especially for patients with chronic diseases like cancer, cardiovascular conditions, diabetes, or mental health disorders.

Magani was created to offer a solution to this issue: a transparent, secure, and affordable online platform where patients can access quality medications when they are unavailable locally.

And we work alongside governments, hospitals, and local health actors to improve long-term medicine availability and advocate for sustainable healthcare solutions.

Magani isn’t just about filling gaps—it’s about closing them for good.

In addition to providing patients with immediate solutions, we work to:

  • Push for local availability of essential medicines through transparency about the platform activity,  advocacy and partnerships.
  • Collaborate with national health authorities and local actors to make medications more accessible.

Our vision is a world where patients no longer need Magani—because their local healthcare systems provide reliable, affordable medications for all. Until then, we are here to help.

Our origins and mission

Magani is an initiative born from Médecins Sans Frontières, an international medical humanitarian organization with decades of experience in improving access to essential medicines. In its work in Low and Middle Income Countries, MSF was often faced with persistent drug shortages, unaffordable prices, and unreliable supply chains, and thus sought to create a direct, transparent, and safe way for patients to access the medications they need—especially for chronic and complex diseases, in case they are not available locally, and then support long term solutions. That is how MSF launched the Magani Project.

A History of Advocacy for Access

For years, MSF has been at the forefront of global advocacy for medicine accessibility, working to:

  • Lower the price of life-saving drugs by pushing for fairer pricing policies.
  • Adapt treatments to resource-limited settings to ensure they can be effectively used where they are most needed.
  • Support healthcare systems in responding to medical crises where access to essential medicines is limited.

Despite these efforts, gaps remain, leaving many patients without the medications they are prescribed. Magani was created as a practical response—an immediate, patient-focused solution to bridge these gaps while continuing advocacy for long-term change.

MSF initiated Magani as a proof-of-concept project after extensive feasibility studies. Our role is to:

  • Ensure that the platform remains focused on patient needs rather than profit.
  • Use Magani’s data to advocate for sustainable, local solutions that eventually make Magani unnecessary.
